John Purcell Paper A5(ish) sketchbook number 1, begun 23rd August 2000
Sorry for the break in transmission. Back now.
There must have been another sketchbook (or several) between the last of the Seawhites and this one (possibly an A4 one - oh the extravagance) but we're picking up here now because, well, because I know where the A5 ones are.
This must have been not long after I first became aware of the very wonderful linework of Nicolas Bentley, having discovered a hardback copy of How Can You Bear To Be Human for about a fiver in the madly chaotic secondhand bookshop in Brighton that used to have books just piled up in the window. Can't recall the name but if you knew Brighton around this time you'll know the one I mean. Anyway, Bentley was a revelation and there's some straight copies (that undertaker, for one) and a lot of influence showing in these pages.

Comments:
The undertaker is magnificent. And there is something a bit Hergé about the man in the hat facing him.
Both (I think) slightly inept rip offs directly from Bentley (though it's just possible I may have tinkered with the costume on the non-undertaker).
